. >>> thank you for joining us. i'm mike hydeck in for jc hayward today. the man police named the east coast rapist was scheduled to plead guilty in a virginia courtroom but apparently aaron thomas had a change of his mind. so what happened? let's get right to peggy fox live in manassas. what's the deal, peg? >> reporter: well, mike, aaron thomas was expected to plead guilty to two rapes and three counts of abduction with intent to defile. those charges go back to halloween night of 2009 when three teenage girls who were out trick or treating were abducted and two of them were raped. but today in court when the judge asked aaron thomas how he pleaded for the first rape charge, here's what he said. i don't know which is right or which is wrong. i don't know what i'm doing. the commonwealth's attorney says he wasn't surprised that aaron thomas did not plead guilty because of his previous erratic behavior. >> i certainly would not want him to plead guilty if he had any question about whether he should or not. if i'm not convinced that he's willing and -- ready, willing and able t

that the u.s. commander in afghanistan general john allen, the one who replaced mr. petraeus, that he is guilty of misconduct based on the allegations that are under investigation right now. >> what started as an extramarital affair involving petraeus has evolved into a drama of intrigue and access with many wondering what's next. >> reporter: was it really just friday when we found out about the affair between the very much married now former c.i.a. director david petraeus and this woman, the also very much married biographer paula broadwell. you may know the affair came to light after this woman, 37-year- old married tampa mom jill kelley complained to a friend, an f.b.i. agent. that would be this person here that she was receiving threatening e-mails reportedly from broadwell launching an investigation. and that blue the lid on this -- blew the lid on this. general john allen, the top commander in afghanistan, the man who took petraeus's place is now being investigated. seems when the f.b.i. was looking into those e-mails, they also found 20,000 to 30,000 pages back and forth betwe

hill this morning. thank you. >>> neighbors tell us a woman watched as a prince george's county sheriff's deputy shot and killed her son last night. the shooting happened on 63rd avenue in east riverdale, maryland. the sheriff's captain nancy ridgely says the deputy was trying to serve a temporary protective order. it's believed the man's mother opened the door but then he appeared behind her pointing a gun at the deputy. the deputy fired one shot and killed the man. the deputy is a ten-year veteran and has been placed on leave while the shooting is investigated. >>> also in prince george's county, police have arrested four men in a deadly 2010 shooting that just became a murder case. it's been two years since melvin pike was found shot inside his car, but last week the 29-yard pike died of complications related to that shooting. officers have ruled the manner of death a homicide. the four men have been ged char with murder and several other felony counts. >>> the man convicted of grabbing four women in dupont circle as he bicycled past them is headed to jail for three months. a d.c. ju

't on land. it's also on the water. the d.c. fire department boat rescue fleet just isn't what it used to be. this is the john glenn. it is the biggest boat in that fleet. the department still uses it to patrol but given all the potential threats to homeland security, there are questions about just how effective this boat could be. that's because it's out there on the water but the communication system is broken. the radio can't transmit a distress call. also the coast guard documentation has expired. >> part of the communication system doesn't work. it appears the certification for the boat that should have been applied for back in august, the date was missed. >> reporter: so the question now whether to apply for grants to repair the boat. those repairs will cost about $700,000. the other option is to lobby capitol hill and to see if they can get some money to buy a new state of the art boat. there are a couple of options. we have to figure out and wait to see what comes of this. as you mentioned earlier, there are potential discussions of cutting the number of medics during the overnight h
